By Jerry DeVos

Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad and Predecessors, Volume 3

The Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad and Predecessors, Volume 3 provides a comprehensive look at the rolling stock, locomotives, motorized railcars, freight cars and non-revenue equipment manufactured for or by the narrow gauge lines in Franklin County, Maine. This third volume describes the locomotives and freight cars built by the Portland Company; the history of the shops of the Franklin & Megantic, Phillips & Rangeley, Sandy River and Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes railroads; the excursion cars built by the Phillips & Rangeley; and the excursion cars, railcars and railbuses, and cabooses built by the Sandy River and SR&RL. This and subsequent volumes are the result of nearly 15 years of research primarily in sources not used by previous authors. Many of the photographs shown are published for the first time and will be of interest to both the historian and modeler. This volume will be followed by others which will include equipment rosters, equipment drawings and a presentation of the railroad lines including the buildings, structures and related industries. Each volume will feature a complete bibliography and index. Hardcover, 8 1/2 x 11", 286 pages, 343 b/w photos.
